7 Ways to Relax Without Screen Time

It’s easy to get distracted and lost in the glow of our screens, from phones and tablets to laptops and TVs. Constant screen time can lead to burnout, eye strain, anxiety and difficulty sleeping. If you’re looking to unwind and recharge without a screen in sight, here are seven simple and effective ways to relax:

1. Read a book or listen to an audiobook

Escape into a new world or learn something new through a book or audiobook. Reading stimulates your imagination, helps reduce stress, and improves focus. Audiobooks can be a great alternative if you want to relax while lying down or doing light activities.

2. Practice meditation or breathwork

Meditation and breathwork are excellent practices for calming the mind and reducing overall stress and worry. Take 10-15 minutes to focus on your breath, quiet your thoughts, and bring your awareness to the present moment. There are also apps that can guide you (without requiring excessive screen time), but traditional guided audio or practicing mindfulness in silence works just as well.

3. Get outdoors

Whether it’s a walk in the park, bushwalking, or simply sitting in your backyard, spending time in nature is a powerful way to de-stress. Fresh air, sunlight, and natural surroundings can elevate your mood and help you feel more grounded. Consider combining your time outside with some light exercise, like yoga, for an added relaxation boost.

4. Journaling

Putting your thoughts on paper can be a therapeutic way to process emotions, reflect on your day, or practice gratitude. Journaling helps clear mental clutter and provides a creative outlet. Try writing about what you’re grateful for, setting goals, or simply freewriting to release any pent-up stress.

5. Engage in a creative hobby

Crafting, drawing, painting, knitting, or any other creative hobby can be an excellent way to unwind and focus your mind. These activities offer a form of self-expression that allows you to relax and enter a state of “flow”—a meditative-like state where time flies by as you’re fully absorbed in the activity.

6. Take a bath or practice self-care

A warm bath can be very relaxing. Add bath salts, essential oils, or calming candles to create a spa-like atmosphere at home. Self-care can extend beyond the bath to activities like doing a face mask, giving yourself a manicure, or using a body scrub—anything that helps you feel pampered and nurtured.

7. Cook or bake

For some, cooking or baking can be a calming and enjoyable way to pass the time. Preparing a delicious meal or dessert can engage the senses and keep your mind focused on the task at hand. The result? A relaxing experience with the added bonus of a satisfying meal!

Relaxation doesn’t need to involve staring at a screen. By incorporating any of these non-digital activities into your daily routine, you can find peace, reduce stress, and improve your mental and physical well-being to promote better quality sleep.
