Harnessing the Power of Breathwork on World Breathing Day

Last Updated on November 7, 2024 by Erin Blair

As the world celebrates World Breathing Day, Australian Breathwork and Yoga Teacher, and Greencare Wellness Expert Kate Kendall, highlights the role of mindful breathing in supporting wellbeing. In today’s fast-paced world, where the simple act of breathing often goes unnoticed, Kate discusses how breathwork may help bring more vitality and balance into daily life.

“Breathing is a fundamental aspect of life often overlooked. Breathing mindfully can help us connect with our bodies and become more aware of how we feel,” says Kate. “Many people breathe through their mouths without realising it, particularly in the early hours of the day.”

Kate explains that long-term mouth breathing may sometimes be associated with oral health issues, and that nasal breathing is recommended by many for its potential to support healthy breathing habits. Common barriers to effective nose breathing include allergies, asthma, stress, poor posture, and mouth breathing itself.

To experience the benefits of nasal breathing, Kate suggests adopting a “low, slow nose breathing” approach, emphasizing breathing deeply into the belly. “By closing the mouth gently and breathing through your nose, you can help filter out dust and allergens, support oxygen uptake, and humidify the air you breathe.”

She adds, “While nasal breathing may feel challenging initially, it can support energy, focus, and calm throughout the day. During physical activities like yoga, nasal breathing can help sustain energy levels and enhance focus.”

Kate shares that many clients report positive effects, including improved focus, posture, and sleep quality, after incorporating mindful breathwork techniques. She explains that nose breathing may help support the body’s relaxation response, which can contribute to better stress management and overall wellbeing.

World Breathing Day encourages people around the world to celebrate conscious breathing and take time to appreciate the impact of mindful breathwork in daily life.
