The holidays can be busy, and it’s common for routines to feel a little more hectic than usual with longer days, family gatherings and the usual end-of-year rush. While it can be a joyful time, it may also feel a little full.
Meditation Teacher and member of the Greencare Wellness team, Soelae Riley, shares simple micro-meditation ideas that many people may find grounding during the festive season. These short practices can offer a brief pause between summer activities or end-of-year commitments.
Why People Explore Micro-Meditations
Micro-meditations are brief mindfulness practices – often just 2–5 minutes – that some people use to create a moment of stillness or reset during a busy day. These short pauses can be a simple way to reconnect with your breath and check in with how you’re feeling. Micro-Meditations can also be done from anywhere, so they are a simple way to reset and reconnect with yourself.
The approach is less about long formal practice and more about taking small intentional breaks that fit into everyday life.
Simple Meditation to Try
Soelae Riley, Greencare’s meditation teacher, suggests starting with an extended-exhale breathing technique. Here’s a general approach you can try:
Settle in: Sit comfortably and, if appropriate, gently close your eyes. Notice your natural breath.
Extend the exhale: Inhale softly for a count of 2, then exhale for a count of 4. If it feels comfortable, you can gradually extend the exhale.
Focus on the sensation: Pay attention to the movement of the breath.
Continue for 2–5 minutes: A few minutes can offer a moment of pause during a busy day.
People often explore this technique when they want a simple way to create a short period of quiet or reflection.
