Post Operative Pain

What is Post Operative Pain?

Post operative pain or post surgery pain can either be acute or chronic and may result from tissue damage, inflammation, nerve damage, or psychological factors. Acute pain lasts up to seven days after the surgery, and pain that lasts for three months or more is considered chronic. The pain can vary in intensity and duration depending on the type of surgery, the patient’s pain tolerance, and the effectiveness of pain management strategies.

Symptoms of post surgery pain include:

What are traditional treatments for post operative pain?

After surgery, patients are often advised to take simple painkillers such as paracetamol, or anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen. Opioids are usually also prescribed to treat post operative pain, but come with unwanted side effects and may lead to long term dependency and addiction.

To treat post operative pain without medication, Gentle exercise and physiotherapy may also be prescribed and encouraged where possible.
