5 Potential Uses of Plant-based Medicine

At Greencare our highly experienced doctors take a responsible approach in prescribing plant based and endocannabinoid medicines for patients who present with many different symptoms, as an alternative to conventional pharmaceutical drugs.

Let’s discuss 5 potential health uses of plant-based medicine.

1 - Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting

Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) is one of the most distressing side-effects to chemotherapy. Severity of CINV depends on the individual patient, type of treatment and dosage. When chemotherapy enters the body, sensors in the digestive system and brain detect its presence as a foreign substance. As a reaction, nausea and vomiting occur. Nausea is an uneasy feeling in the stomach with the urge to vomit. Vomiting, also called emesis, is an involuntary reflex that pushes the stomach contents out through the mouth.

Studies have shown that plant based endocannabinoid medicines can potentially improve CINV symptoms. Medicinal cannabis can potentially alleviate CINV associated with cancer and its treatment. It could likely combat various symptoms and thus improve the quality of life of those affected. Plant based medicines may relieve nausea and vomiting, including during chemotherapy[1]. Medicinal cannabis has the ability to inhibit serotonin release by cells in the small intestine. They also have an antiemetic effect[2], which is a drug effective against vomiting and nausea.

2 - Epilepsy and Seizures

Epilepsy is a chronic disorder, of which is recurrent, unprovoked seizures. A person is diagnosed with epilepsy if they have two unprovoked seizures that were not caused by some known and reversible medical condition. Epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological disorder and affects people of all ages. It is a spectrum condition with a wide range of seizure types and control varying per individual. The seizures in epilepsy may be related to a brain injury or a family tendency, but often the cause is completely unknown. Having seizures and epilepsy can affect one's safety, relationships, work, driving, and so much more. Public perception and treatment of people with epilepsy are often bigger problems than actual seizures.

Studies have shown that plant based endocannabinoid medicines can potentially improve Epilepsy symptoms. In Australia, while up to 70% of people with epilepsy are able to obtain seizure control with antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), around 30% continue to have seizures[1].  The compounds derived from the CBD can reduce the severity and frequency of seizures in some people, especially in children who have severe epilepsy disorders[2].  Plant based medication may also be able to help control seizures[3].

3 - Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is a pain that lasts for 3 to 6 months or more. Chronic pain can have real effects on your day-to-day life and your mental health. Sometimes chronic pain can begin without any obvious cause. But for many people, it starts after an injury or because of a health condition. Some of the leading causes include:

  • Arthritis
  • Back problems
  • Previous injury or surgery
  • Migraine
  • Endometriosis
  • Infections
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Nerve damage from diabetes (diabetic neuropathy)
  • Cancer

Chronic pain can range from mild to severe. It can continue day after day or come and go. The pain can feel like:

  • A dull ache
  • Throbbing
  • Burning
  • Shooting
  • Squeezing
  • Stinging
  • Soreness
  • Stiffness

Studies have shown that plant based endocannabinoid medicine can potentially improve Chronic Pain symptoms. CBD potentially has analgesic properties and attaches to and desensitises receptors that respond to heat, pain and inflammation[1] . Plant based medicine may be an effective treatment for chronic pain in adults, reducing pain and inflammation[2]. The Therapeutic Goods Administration lists chronic pain under its medical cannabis guidance documents and offers information on its evidence, recommended dosing and prescription.

4 - Insomnia

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder where individuals find it difficult to fall asleep, stay asleep or both.  The disorder can lower energy levels and mood as well as cause difficulties with health, work performance and quality of life. Around one third of Australians experience insomnia at some point in their lives.

Common symptoms and problems with Insomnia can also include;

  • difficulty waking at a normal time
  • daytime sleepiness or fatigue (may not be present)
  • poor concentration
  • forgetfulness or making errors
  • irritable or grumpy mood
  • ‘sleep anxiety’ or worrying about lack of sleep
  • anxiety or depression (these issues can also cause insomnia)
  • tension headaches
  • digestive symptoms

Studies have shown that plant based endocannabinoid medicines can potentially improve Insomnia symptoms. Plant based medicine can improve insomnia, restfulness, and sleep quality[1]. Scientific research has identified endocannabinoid medicine compounds are the major players in promoting sleep and restfulness, including direct interaction with receptors in the brain, and potentiation of the body’s own natural sleep-enhancing compounds[2]. Endocannabinoid medicine can typically reduce the amount of REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep received[3]. Reducing REM sleep means reducing dreams and receiving a deeper sleep state, which is the most restorative, restful part of the sleep cycle. A published 2019 study[4], found that among plant based medicine users for sleep, 84% said it was “very” or “extremely” helpful.

5 - Depression

Depression is a serious condition that affects your physical and mental health which can last for long periods of time without any apparent reason. Depression is classified as a mood disorder. It may be described as feelings of sadness, loss, or anger that interfere with a person’s everyday activities. People experience depression in different ways. It may interfere with your daily work, resulting in lost time and lower productivity. It can also influence relationships and some chronic health conditions. Signs and symptoms can be seen physically, behaviourally, mentally and emotionally.

Studies have shown that plant based endocannabinoid medicines can potentially improve Depression symptoms. Endocannabinoid medicines researchers believe that it’s potential benefits for depression are related to its positive effect on serotonin receptors in the brain. Low serotonin levels are likely connected to depression. Plant based medicine may affect how your brain’s chemical receptors respond to the serotonin that’s already in your system. Endocannabinoid medicine has anti-stress effects, which may reduce depression related to stress[1]. Plant based medicine compounds can help with improving mood[2] . They can help break down ruminating thoughts and negative thought spirals[2]
